I was born and raised in New England in a town by the sea. And although I now live far away from where I grew up coastal New England, still draws me, and in particular my old stomping ground of coastal Massachusetts. Whether you're looking for fresh seafood, rich local history, or a great beach to spend your summer on, scenic coastal Massachusetts has a little bit of something for everyone. And one of my favorite Massachusetts somethings are the lighthouses.
With 192 miles of coastline, Massachusetts is home to dozens of lighthouses. It would be a vacation in itself to try and visit all of them. And I've made it one of my 2020 goals to paint some of my favorites. I enjoy painting the antique structures and wondering about the lives of the people who managed the lighthouses throughout history.
If you are lucky to visit them, many of the lighthouses are mini museums to an intriguing and adventurous past. It was no small feet to guard the rugged Atlantic coastline and to keep ships lost at sea during powerful storms safe.
I hope you enjoy my artwork. You will find a mix of traditional lighthouses and some renditions a little more funky. I was inspired to paint lighthouses with a little (or sometimes a lot) of dynamic warping after stumbling upon the incredible art of New Orleans painter Michalopoulos.
What I aspire to give is a new twist on an old New England favorite.
